The Sports Hound: 2013 NFL Mock Draft 2.1

With some new coaching hires and player releases, this edition of the mock will change quite a bit.

Also check out my list of NFL Mock Draft Databases to see what other people think about the upcoming draft.

1. Kansas City Chiefs - Luke Joeckel OT/Texas A&M

The more I think about it, I feel like Andy Reid will either sign Alex Smith at QB or look to trade for one of his guys using a later round draft pick.  Brandon Albert may leave as a free agent or he could be moved over to G in this scenario if he is retained.  There is plenty of talent on this team and best player available is probably the mindset.

Previous pick: Geno Smith

2. Jacksonville Jaguars - Bjoern Werner DE/Florida State

Werner is almost in the same mold of Babin who they felt highly of when they claimed him off waivers.  Babin is going to be 33 by the beginning of the season and Werner is one of the top pass rushers in this draft.

3. Oakland Raiders - Star Lotulelei DT/Utah

Seymour and Bryant are both free agents and Kelly is getting up there in age as well.  Lotulelei is one of the top prospects in this draft and fits a major need.  If he is unavailable Milliner is the next best thing.

4. Philadelphia Eagles - Eric Fisher OT/Central Michigan

With the recent release of Demetress Bell and Jason Peters and Todd Herremans coming off of injuries, they need to upgrade their offensive line.  Michael Vick will be back to run the offense officially and he will need better protection.  Could also look at the entire defense with this pick as well.

Previous pick: Dee Milliner

5. Detroit Lions - Dee Milliner CB/Alabama

The Lions need to upgrade their entire defense, but I think that CB is their biggest need.  With Cliff Avril as a free agent and Kyle Vanden Bosch being released DE is major need as well.  I do feel that better coverage will allow the defensive line to get more pressure on the QB.

Previous pick: Damontre Moore

6. Cleveland Browns - Barkevious Mingo OLB/LSU

With the top CB in Milliner off the board, the Browns could look at one of the top pass rushers in the draft.  The switch back to the 3-4 and the tough AFC North division has a big impact on this pick.

7. Arizona Cardinals - Geno Smith QB/West Virginia

With the top 2 OT’s off the board, the Cardinals need to fill there next biggest need at QB.  Smith is an instant upgrade over Kevin Kolb and John Skelton and would appease Larry Fitzgerald in the process.  They could look at Chance Warmack here as well and look OT in the 2nd round.

Previous pick: Luke Joeckel

8. Buffalo Bills - Ezekial Ansah DE/BYU

After a poor showing from the QB’s at the Senior Bowl, especially new head coach Doug Marrone’s boy Nassib the Bills will look towards the best player on their board.  That could come down to a few different positions, but I think that they will go QB in the 2nd round now.  Ansah also was unstoppable at the Senior Bowl.

9. New York Jets - Keenan Allen WR/California

The Jets need help on both sides of the ball.   Their defense is aging and whoever the QB will be has no weapons.  Stephen Hill wasn’t a good pick last year and he’s proved he still can’t catch the ball consistently.  Allen is the best WR in this draft and will be an upgrade over everyone on the team.

10. Tennessee Titans - Damontre Moore DE/Texas A&M

The Titans need to upgrade their offensive line more than anything, but their pass rush wasn’t good enough last season.  They spent a lot of money on Kamerion Wimbley, but he wasn’t as productive as they had hoped.  Moore would be an upgrade over Derrick Morgan and Wimbey right now.

Previous pick: Eric Fisher

11. San Diego Chargers - Jarvis Jones OLB/Georgia

Both Shaun Phillips and Antwan Barnes are free agents and the Chargers drafted Melvin Ingram last season.  Yet, Jones is too good to pass up at this point.  His stock has fallen due to the red flags on his health, but a pairing of Jones and Ingram could be dangerous moving forward.

12. Miami Dolphins - Cordarrelle Patterson WR/Tennessee

After a surprise season from the Dolphins and a very stout defense, they look to give Tannehill more weapons.  The Dolphins need to give Tannehill more weapons and with Brian Hartline and Reggie Bush as free agents, decisions must be made.

13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Xavier Rhodes CB/Florida State

After Milliner, it’s a toss up for the 2nd best CB in the draft.  Nonetheless, the Bucs need to figure out who their guy is and draft him.  It’s their biggest need and it’ll come down to Rhodes, Banks and Trufant.

14. Carolina Panthers - Kenny Vaccaro S/Texas

The Panthers can go in a couple directions with this pick.  Cam Newton needs a new shiny toy to throw the ball to and the defense needs a DT and S.  Nakamura was embarrassed weekly last season and Vaccaro or Reid could be the pick here.

15. New Orleans Saints - Sheldon Richardson DT/Missouri

The Saints need all types of help on the defensive side of the ball.  They need a pass rush, but they also need quality interior linemen.  Richardson is a great pick at this point and would only help.

16. St. Louis Rams - Lane Johnson OT/Oklahoma

The Rams have upgraded their defense last season and are a fierce unit.  They need to work on protecting Bradford more and giving him more weapons, especially with Steven Jackson possibly retiring.

17. Pittsburgh Steelers - Kevin Minter ILB/LSU

The Steelers need to upgrade their offensive line and linebacking corps.  The top LT’s are off the board and Minter is a perfect type of player to come to Pittsburgh and contribute immediately.

18.  Dallas Cowboys - Chance Warmack OG/Alabama

With Jerry Jones still in control and him being in love with Tony Romo, QB is probably not an option here again.  Jones has to know that his patch work on the OL last season wasn’t good enough and he grabs the best prospect at G in the draft.

19. New York Giants - Shariff Floyd DT/Florida

Osi is probably on his way out this off-season and Tuck just needs to get back on track.  Floyd could come in and be a disruptive force that could open things up for JPP and whoever else they have playing DE.

20. Chicago Bears - D.J. Fluker OT/Alabama

The Bears biggest weakness is the offensive line and with a new coaching staff coming in they need to protect Cutler and give him more weapons.

21. Cincinnati Bengals - Robert Woods WR/USC

After an impressive campaign from the defense and upgrading the offensive line last season, the Bengals need to give Dalton more help.  Sanu was coming on until his injury, but Woods would make an immediate impact and fit perfectly opposite Green.

22. St. Louis Rams (from Washington Redskins)  - Tyler Eifert TE/Notre Dame

With all the picks the Rams acquired from the Redskins last season for RG3, they can go so many directions to re-building their franchise.  Eifert gives Bradford a much needed safety blanket in the middle of the field and can also stretch the field with his athletic abilities.

23. Minnesota Vikings - Justin Hunter WR/Tennessee

Coming off a surprising playoff run this season on the back of Adrian Peterson, the Vikings need to give him help.  Harvin is not enough and Ponder could another WR.  Hunter would be a great compliment to what the Vikings have already.

24. Indianapolis Colts  - Dion Jordan OLB/Oregon

With Freeney on his way out, the Colts need to upgrade their pass rush.  After switching to a 3-4 defense last season, they have to start getting the right players to fit.

25. Seattle Seahawks  - Barrett Jones OL/Alabama

The Seahawks have one of the scariest defenses in the NFL and Lynch has been able to find an awful lot of rushing lanes.  Upgrading the offensive line with the most versatile player available is a great move in my opinion.

26. Green Bay Packers  - Manti Te’o ILB/Notre Dame

Aaron Rodgers have been on his back more than anyone this season and Newhouse is not the answer at LT.  Too bad all the top prospects at OT are off the board.  The Packers will just have to settle on upgrading their horrific defense instead.

27. Houston Texans  - Alec Ogletree LB/Georgia

With Brian Cushing coming off a season ending injury and Bradie James, Barrett Ruud and Conner Barwin being free agents they can’t keep everyone.  Ogletree would be a great fit for an already great defense. Previous pick: Eric Reid

28. Denver Broncos  - Tavon Austin WR/West Virginia

Austin is a versatile weapon that would give Manning another option in the slot with Stokley aging.

29. Atlanta Falcons  - Zach Ertz TE/Stanford

The greatest TE to ever play the game is nearing the end of his career, although his statistics aren’t showing it.  Ertz would give Ryan another weapon while allowing them to move toward the future without Gonzalez.

30. New England Patriots  - Desmond Trufant CB/Washington

With Talib as a free agent and the way Flacco dismantled their secondary in the 2nd half of the conference championships, they need the best CB available.  A WR is also a need with Welker probably on his way out and no other options.

31. San Francisco 49ers  - DeAndre Hopkins WR/Clemson

I wasn’t a fan of the Jenkins pick last season and he hasn’t done much this year.  Randy Moss hasn’t shown much either, yet Crabtree had a break out year.  With all the talent on the team, they still need another WR for Kaepernick moving forward.

32. Baltimore Ravens  - Sam Montgomery OLB/LSU

A Super Bowl win and end of Ray Lewis’ reign is over the finale to the season.  Danell Ellerbe and Paul Kruger are free agents and both players might not be retained.  They have to upgrade the linebacking corps.

Previous pick: Johnathan Hankins

What about Keenan Allen to the Lions???

    • http://sportshoundblog.com/ Daniel Trawick

You were right. With Vanden Bosch officially gone and Avril most likely not being signed, it’s down to DE or Milliner.

  • joeisme

Te’o got eaten up in the big games. He is waaayy overrated. The Packers could use an ILB, but not this guy.

    • http://sportshoundblog.com/ Daniel Trawick

You are right about that. I mentioned that in my latest mock on why I think he’ll drop out of the 1st round now.
